Gatorade Sports Science Institute

Founded in 1985, the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI) is committed to helping athletes optimise their health and performance through research and education in hydration and nutrition science.

GSSI scientists study the effects of nutrition on the human body before, during and after exercise. For more than two decades, hundreds of amateur, elite and professional athletes have participated in testing with GSSI and in studies with university research partners around the world. GSSI’s headquarter lab, mobile and satellite laboratories and on the field testing enable a variety of research.

GSSI collaborates with universities and researchers around the world to undertake research in exercise science and sports nutrition. The Institute is internationally recognized for its research and education offerings, which serve nearly 100,000 subscribers in more than 145 countries. In addition, more than 100 Student Research Grants have been awarded to research fellows and graduate students throughout North America, Latin America, Australia, Asia and Europe supporting research in a variety of areas.

Professor Asker Jeukendrup

Professor Asker Jeukendrup is the Global Senior Director of the Gatorade Sports Science Institute.

As one of the world’s leading sports nutrition experts his appointment demonstrates a commitment to expanding the Institute’s learning and scientific agenda.


Following his studies at Maastricht University and the University of Texas, Asker became the youngest professor at the Birmingham University in 1998.


Asker is a distinguished sport and exercise nutritionist, having published over 200 peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters. He has also organised numerous International Conferences on the topic of sports nutrition and speaks at leading industry events around the world.


Asker’s research has had a significant impact in the field of sports nutrition. His research has also had a direct impact on the nutritional advice given to athletes by translating the science into practical messages – he has worked with an array of world class athletes including Haile Gebrselassie and the Rabobank cycling team.


In his spare time, Asker is a keen triathlete and is a 19-time Ironman finisher.
